Some of my team's
accomplishments while serving the Oakville community with MOHA (selected
items)
League /
Player Development
– Developed MOHA House League Senior Convenor role, into an active House
League Committee to provide a balanced perspective and input on House
League operations. Built a committed group of quality individuals
who worked as a team to manage MOHA's House League minor hockey program and identify opportunities to
improve what is already a great House League offer.
League
Growth - During my
tenure as Vice President, our House League grew from approximately
150 teams and 2,400 participants to 232 teams and 3,600 participants.
Lead evolution to: single year age groups to Major Midget, added a
“Juvenile” division to support our older players and introduced three levels
of play
at most ages to provide a better quality program and learning
environment. Oakville House League teams routinely enter and challenge or win select level
tournaments and "unfortunately" they are now often “not accepted” in many House League events.
Developed “Gold Standard” Timbit Program
–
Oakville's
program was recognized by the OMHA, Tim Hortons, Maple Leaf Sports and
Entertainment and other centres as “Best in Class” for introducing "new"
entrants to the game. I have had the
privilege of presenting our program on ice several times at the Air Canada Centre
(ACC) for Tim Hortons and MLSE
“Coaches helping Coaches” development seminars. My efforts were also
recognized by Tim Hortons' asking me to select and manage "Timbits”
players as cast for Tim Hortons commercials and
to attend shoots as an “expert” contributor.
House
League Goalie Program
– Recognizing that House League (HL) goalies often get short shift in
development support from their Coach volunteers, I introduced a highly successful and unique to Oakville
training program to support our House League goalies with qualified
instruction at very low cost taking advantage of under-utilized arena
"shooter pads".
Use of Gyms Program
– Introduced a new program to allow teams (Town Rep and House
League) the opportunity to develop team dynamics in an off ice
environment conducive to teaching and learning. Recognizing the high
cost and limited availability of "ice time" I arranged to book blocks of
school gym time for team use – very successful – low Association cost
and no
additional cost to participants.
Coach
Recognition and Support
– Introduced a program to support each new House League Head
Coach with pucks, a whiteboard and whistle to offset “cost” of getting
involved – very well received.
Volunteer Training Reimbursement
– Introduced a program to provide partial reimbursement for Coach and
Trainer programs (Town Rep and House League volunteers).
Enhanced Volunteer Recognition
– Established and updated House League Convenor Honourarium program.
Instituted new “Unsung Hero” awards and revitalized and hosted annual key
volunteer evening.
Coach
and Convenor Guidelines
– Developed and updated guidelines and best practice documents for our
House League Coaches and Convenors to assist them in their roles. These
guidelines have been used for a number of years in Oakville and have
been requested by and used as a base for other organizations.
Established Position Descriptions - and roles and responsibilities
for positions within the HL structure as well as defining and getting
board approval for the addition of a HL Administrator role.
Introduced House League Parent Survey - as a feedback tool on our
program and volunteers as well as a vehicle to provide suggestions.
Issued to all parents every season and each response was personally
reviewed and as appropriate specifically followed up on. 500 - 1,000
surveys were completed each year.
Ice
Negotiation / Scheduling
– Negotiate
with Town on behalf of MOHA for all ice hours and blocks relative to
other user groups and conflicts. Served as a member of user committee
group that developed Oakville's Town
ice allocation formula and successfully lobbied for improved hours,
increased hours and rate relief for the Association (Town Rep and House League).
Tournament Support –
Over the
years I have been a big supporter of and contributor to both the Town
Rep Richard Bell and House League Frank Sabatino tournaments. With
respect to the Richard Bell tournament for a number of years I did all
scheduling and was on site for the duration of the tournament to manage
all “game / scoring / rules” issues. \
FSMT
Tournament -
I am one of the long term Committee
members of the Frank Sabatino Memorial Tournament which I helped to
establish in memory of an outstanding volunteer. I have supported this
event for 10 years and also look after their web site
www.fsmt.ca
Volunteer Database
– Designed an association volunteer database that included over 2,000
individuals and their service history as a resource in securing
volunteers each season. This database served as a key reference source for volunteer
identification, information tracking and selection for team roles.
Website
– Developed Association web site, established ISP and served as Webmaster for
several years
Earned
Recognition for MOHA as key OMHA Development Centre
– Gained MOHA recognition as a model development centre contributing and
instituting best practices in volunteer training and support. Chosen by the OMHA to host initial Development II and Combined Pilot
NCCP Clinics. In
addition, I have been invited to present “Our way” at OMHA Development
Workshops. When changes are proposed the comment is “Ask Wayne / Oakville what
they think”!
Uniform
Sourcing –
Managed
contract and relationship with uniform supplier (Town Rep and House
League) including the introduction of the current upgraded House League
uniforms.
Introduced
“OAKVILLE” logo - for the Minor Bantam and up sweaters as a well
received change from the prior caricature emblems.
Sourced
Funding
– solicited and earned funding from a number of sources to support
association development (Bell Community Spirit / True Sport, Oakville
Sports Council – multiple, Tim Hortons). Funds supported purchase of
goal tending equipment and reimbursement of volunteer training. |
