Oct 31.5 - quick update on a few key
points
-
I think - touch wood or my melon that
base is back up and running, files are resynced and the gremlins are
gone ????? - Now if this uploads I'm golden.
-
0 - 8 bye bye Don - it wasn't great
while it did not last - resigning may beat getting pushed but
impacts the package. after their great 4 - 6 start, there was nowhere to go
but up down
-
I have posted a bounty on telemarketers
who call at 5:45 on Halloween to do a survey - A pox on their house.
-
Greg Zaun practiciing with the Leafs - I
kid you not -
link
-
Sid the Kid hurt ? - I hope not but it
will destroy number two son in the hockey pool - I guess that makes
up for my guy (Ovechkin) going to Russia to visit Grandma.
-
Love that stale "unhealthy" candy and
Hershey must be going nuts (no pun intended) or starting a massive
witch hunt (pun intended) as the candy recalled and to be destroyed
roughly two years ago
is showing up in Toronto stores. I wonder if I can get some for my
"friends"..
Only in Canada you say! Pity.
Oct 31 –
Happy Hallowe’en! - NOT

It seems the gremlins have decided to exact
their revenge on me as my “base” PC has succumbed to a virus attack
Wednesday evening. I will refer to it as a lower body injury. Somehow
the attacker slipped by my defense and scored. This is not a good thing
and if any of you have received any SPAM emails from my addresses, my
apologies. I have spent most of the last two days trying to “clean up”
the system. This is despite having current Virus software in place and
active – I am not happy and did not anticipate spending holiday time at
this. The battle continues as we speak. I have now learned more about
Trojans (not the wooden horse or the other kind) than I had any interest
in knowing.
So far I have had to run various ID / Removal tools
for Malicious Software from both Microsoft and Symantec, Remove my Virus
Software, Run a removal tool from Symantec, Run Several full scans in
safe mode. Edit my registry. Reload Virus software. Rescan and I am
still not there.
I am rapidly approaching the dreaded “reformat /
reload” point which I am really trying to avoid as that sets up another
whole series of challenges. To top it off, the Internet is operating at
a snail’s pace today, or at least it is at my place, so I don’t know if
it is me, Cogeco, the world, or Mother Nature and frankly I don’t much
care. As follow-up it seems it’s me as I have sufficiently disrupted
network traffic that I have been red-flagged and cut off (temporarily)
by Cogeco as I try to fix the problem.
As a warning to others, I likely picked it up from
a P2P file share with Limewire. I was looking for a quick couple of MP3s
and probably got more than I was looking for. It still does not excuse
the Virus Protection software from not doing its job but I guess I am to
blame as well. That’s no fun as it doesn’t give me anyone to yell at.
With all this lovely computer fun occupying my time
I have not been able to come up with any pithy content for the blog
other than to advise all to avoid me for the near future and good luck
to any kids who show up at my door tonight.
"Gee Wayne, how did you spend your holidays!"
History – apropos of the date and my current
mindset, let me remind you that on this day in 1926 Harry Houdini passed
away from peritonitis after being punched in the stomach 12 days earlier
in Montreal. He didn’t escape from that one.
Posted from the “back-up” unit as I am still
working on the other piece of s____ .

Oct 29 -
There are days when Collingwood leaves a lot to be desired - so - when
our company left we decided to pack it up and return home - missed my
projection TV. After an 8 foot diagonal, a 26" console just doesn't cut
it anymore.
Passchendaele - While
we were in Collingwood, my "friend" suggested we go and see "Passchendaele".
As both of us are somewhat history buffs it seemed like a good idea. Our
impression was that Passchendaele was along the lines of a docu drama on
the key role played by Canadian soldiers in one of the uglier, costliest
and some say stupidist battles of modern warfare. Sometimes referred to
the Third battle of Ypres, Passchendaele was the last of the trench
battles with the philosophy that if we "throw enough men at them"
regardless of their fortified positions we can beat them. The Allies
suffered almost 500,000 casualties of which about 140,000 were KIA. By
advancing five miles, the macabre calculation is about 2" or 5 cm per
dead soldier! Considering that just 4 months later the Allies let
Germany retake this area essentially uncontested.
With this as our mindset we
settled in, watched the untold mindless promos, commercials and coming
events only to be subjected to a feature presentation that could at most
be charitably referred to as a Bad Chick Flick with weird religious
imagery undertones. Critic Wayne's rating - five thumbs down - do
not go, stay home and stick pins in your eyes instead. It will be more
fun, less painful and not cost anything..
Kegs - More on my
brief Keg note - this was one good learning from Collingwood. As many of
you know, I prefer imported beverage to domestic slops
hops. My base plan usually includes Guinness but I am flexible. While
browsing through the imported beer section (small as it was) in the
Collingwood LCBO, I stumbled across some "mini" kegs. Two of them were
German - one a pilsner. For $20 and change you get 5 litres of suds on
tap in a mini keg that sits in the fridge, lasts up to 30 days (like
that will happen) and provides great "fresh tapped draft" a stein or
whatever at a time. Wayne's rating - five thumbs up.
Two cautions:
1. There was a Heineken keg
- dsame volume (5 Litres) but over $10 more then my bargain. Cheapo me
says stick with the pilsner - my buddy bought a Heineken and I liked the
pil better and it was cheaper.
2. Be vewy, vewy careful
as Tweety would say. Much as I hate fessing up to my screw-ups I pulled
a dandy here! These handy kegs sit nicely in the fridge for instant
access. However DO NOT place them at the front of the shelf with the tap
facing forward. Apparently when you close the fridge door it is possible
to push the tap and treat the interior of your fridge to a delightful
German lager. Fortunately, someone went to the fridge very shortly after
my "test" and there was limited waste - what a sin. I suppose it is not
necessary to mention that I had to clean up the mess. However as they
say, "There's no use crying over spilled beer".
Cranberry - Our place
in Collingwood was at a Cranberry resort timeshare (we swapped ours
through RCI). We had stayed at a Cranberry Resort before and were happy
with it - hence the return. Won't happen again. There was a whole litany
of issues from our standpoint. As a few - we were expecting a "villa"
type accommodation - nope - two bedroom mini apartment in the main
building, no direct outside access limited amenities, bad lighting and
it leaked. Pool supposed to be adults only after 9:30 PM - nope - and
the hot tub was closed for service. Games room - one 6 foot pool table
you could not shoot on due to wall and column interference and no
"chalk" for the cues - while I did make an absolutely impossible shot
(which I did call so I have to get credit for it) . Note the attractive
colour scheme (the room - not me).

Other games - one pinball
machine that worked, one that did not and an Indy driver game. More of the why we are home early
rationale.
Catch Phrase - A game
I highly recommend for all. Played as two teams (so you need four or
more people) it is sort of an automated cross between charades and
password. The object is to give you partner(s) clues to guess a phrase
and pass the unit before the beeper goes off. Whoever has the disc when
the buzzer goes off loses. Game is whoever gets 7 points first. Sounds
and is simple but it is surprising how "vicious" and hysterical
supposedly mature adults can get with a simple game. Fortunately I am
not at all competitive so that I was able to be the calming force (yeah
right). I hate to think what could happen if parents took this along as
something to do at out of town tournaments - especially after a few
beverages. Toys R Us - about $30, batteries not included.

Here I am, disc in hand trying to get my partner to guess the answer.
History - 1618 - Sir Walter Raleigh was beheaded. just goes to
show you that no good deed goes unpunished. He might as well have kept
his cloak clean.
I should also mention that in recognition of current stock market woes,
Oct. 29, 1929 was the infamous Black Tuesday with over 16 million shares
traded and billions lost.
Hockey - Schenn to stay with Leafs. Originally I was against it but now
I have to agree with him staying up. Why - on a Leaf team that is going
nowhere he might as well have on-ice experience in the NHL to continue
his development. It's not like he is getting limited playing time and he
has shown as one of the top 4 or 5 of the blueline corp in
essentially every game. Besides, it give the Toronto media and fans
something positive to talk about instead of just dumping on the team.
This way they will know for sure where he fits and as an 18 year old
playing as he has - good for him. Now if everyone will just remember he
is 18 (soon 19), it is a long season and he will make mistakes.
Hopefully he has the toughness (mental and physical) to survive it and
the club supports him.

Oct 26
– Reporting to you live from beautiful
downtown Collingwood / Cranberry something or other. I have high-jacked
somebody’s signal – supposedly our lodge. We drove up “the back way”
which does provide some nice scenery but I was not impressed to see
white stuff on the ground.
Collingwood seems to be a busy place,
even at this time of year. Apparently there is a Silver Stick up here
this weekend but I have not checked it out so I don’t know what level.
Maybe that is part of the traffic.
I have already hit the local Canadian
Tire Store and Gas Bar so maybe I can find a way to expense this? Not
likely.
Paid a visit to the local LCBO and
decided to try one of those “new fangled” keg cans. We got it back to
the condo, tapped off a couple of glasses of pilsner and put the keg in
the fridge to stay cold. BUT When we closed the fridge door, the “tap”
was to the front and of course was just far enough out so that the
fridge door tapped the tap. You can figure out the rest. What a waste –
beer gone. The worst part was they made me clean up the mess. Lesson
learned – turn the keg.
Yes – I did see that the Leafs have
won again – two straight. I am sure that the Toronto media and the loyal
band wagon fans are once again making cup parade plans.
I am still in "gloat" mode
on the Moorehead family pool as again I have outpointed all others in
the last two days and extended my lead.
The whole situation with the missing
young man in Barrie is very disturbing. It is terrible to say that you
hope he is holed up somewhere playing video games that some feel are the
root of the problem. However, this may be the most positive resolution
considering other possibilities.
After a reward was offered it is
interesting to note that Microsoft has “doubled” the reward. Is this a
concern re some “sense of responsibility” on their part? While I salute
them for their interest and concern, this is a “dangerous” corporate
decision for a company that some may feel is at least partially “at
fault” for creating the games that some feel are too “addictive” or
“realistic”. I do spend time on computers and was a former “Wolfenstein”
and “Doom” fan, but I still find it hard to fathom the level of
fanaticism that some of these current “games” seem to create. I guess
that is part of the generation gap.
OK Corral – In 1881 was the
infamous gunfight at the OK corral. The Earps (Wyatt and Virgil) with
Doc Holliday TOOK ON THE “Clanton-McLaury” gang. Net result – three dead
for the bad guys – three wounded for the good guys. What is less well
known was that the good guys were subsequently charged with murder but
found nor guilty by a Tombstone jury.
More recently – in 1986, a day Billy
Buckner would rather forget and part of the lore supporting the now
defunct “curse of the Bambino”. In the 10th inning of game 6,
blly let a routine ground ball “out” escape through the wickets in what
would have been the third out keeping the game tied. BUT run scored,
game over Mets won and forced game 7 which they won – World Series –
Mets.
Finally – I see in the on-line
Beaver that Jock Dunbar was recognized by the Oakville Sports Council
for his contribution as a volunteer in minor hockey. A lot of folks had
no idea of a lot of the good things that Jock did for kids over the
years. Despite the fact the Jock hasn’t spoken to me in eight years for
reasons that I need not go into here – he should be recognized for the
good things he did for kids over the years. Congratulations Jock – I’m
gone – so you can come out of retirement.
Back to holidaying (check the tap on
the keg)

– Friday the 24th – I am on Vacation!
Today
is potpourri as I pack to leave town (wait for applause) and get some
R&R – provided I don’t get the panic call as has been known to happen.
Anyway, apropos of nothing:
-
Markets expected to open in freefall today – hints of global
economic meltdown
-
Retirement funds /
portfolios plummet – welcome to the extended workplan
-
Leafs win – where is that second moon in the sky
-
They claim the US election polls are close and Hockey Mom ain’t it –
thank you SNL.
-
Sundin hasn’t made up his mind – you might want to tell him we’ve
lost interest
-
Matthews is 0 – 6 with the Argos but says the team is better (than
what?).
-
My Steelers are in tough this week may go to 5 – 2 and potentially
have a worse record than the Bills 6 – 1???
-
GM may marry Chrysler – like that’ll help – as I heard recently,
when you mate two dinosaurs, you don’t get a gazelle!
-
I’m now 70 points ahead in the Moorehead pool and “not feeling the
love” and finally,
-
I hear the cabal is “really” not happy with me, apparently I’m not
allowed to have let alone express an opinion, especially when it
does not match theirs (I’ll bet they’ve been trying to fix some
links).
Definitely time to leave town
Time to
pack – we’ll see if they have internet (and running water) in
Collingwood. Current big decision Jameson or Bushmills to go with my
Guinness
Sports
– lets remember when – In 1992 Jays win Canada’s first ever World
Series. With the follow-up in 93, it means it has only been 15 years
since Canada won anything. (Yes Habbies – you have not won since 93
either!).
Signing
off.

– To my colleague in London who reads this blog - take note re our
football discussion.
First Mr. Cheesehead, I suspect you have slim to no chance of
your pilgrimage wishes coming true. Visits to Lambeau are only for
Steeler Philistines such as moi.

Mike is the only “Oakville” guy – Christie was from Hamilton
and your good buddy Scott was the Wiiiide Leeeeeft – ran him out of
town.
Sticking with football and Green Bay, is there any
Tempest in the current Favre Teapot? For those of you living under a
rock, Favre, Mr. Green Bay Icon / Legend – retired now unretired, dumped
by GB and now in a new life as a Jet is alleged to have contacted
Detroit Lions “staff” with hot tips and “inside scoop” on how to beat
his former team.
Did he do it? Would it be wrong if he did? Who squealed.
Couple points – first, Detroit’s Prez – Matt Millen does not
live there any more – he was recently turfed. Many would say “it’s about
time” BUT is this related. Second, and more important – you have to be
kidding me – we are talking the Lions here – even with (if it happened)
the Lions lost anyway! What a surprise. If Favre was going to tip off
the folks, he should have picked a better option than the hapless Lions.
Third – guess they won’t be retiring his jersey for a while!
Moving on – the Leafs are at 1 – 5 with five consecutive
losses – when or if will they win again - it is personally humiliating
thatr their only win was against my Wings. Bringing in a “cold” Cujo –
what’s with that – shades of Mike Keenan. I’ll bet Toskala was real
impressed given he had turned in a decent game. Now the threats (and
media barbs) are starting – Jason Blake to the press box to be replaced
with Hollweg? That makes a lot of sense on a team that can't score.
While it may be a long year for Leaf fans it could be veeery
eeenteresting. The “love affair” may be over already.
US Election – I’ve laid off on this one for a while but
it looks like the air is rapidly leaving the GOP balloon. Their politics
are no longer being taken seriously as the media seems more interested
in lampooning Palin and the GOP on her wardrobe “makeover”. That is also
bringing other spending and influence issues bach to the table while
Obama is coasting along on sympathy votes and trying to avoid more “foot
in mouth” disease. The question now does not seem to be if he will win
but by how much. Couple weeks to go – still lots of time for folks to
self destruct – much like the economy.
Economy – I hope folks are starting to pay some
attention. The loonie dropped over 2.6 cents today closing under $0.80
US at $0.7970. There are arguments about where our dollar should be but
combined with ongoing market drops (both the TSX and DJIA were down over
500 points today) things continue to spin down. It would be nice to see
some positive economic indicators but I’m still looking.
Cuba – today in 1962 JFK went on National TV to advise
that the US was establishing a naval quarantine Cuba in view of U2 spy
plane data showing the construction of missile sites. In what became
known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the world came closer to starting
WWIII then at any other time as Kennedy and Khrushchev played the “who
will blink first” game. The US went to DEFCON II (the next to war level)
and things were tense. From a “Western” perspective, Nikita caved. I
wonder what they think?
People's Car - Today in 1934, Ferdinand Porsche (yes,
Mr. Porsche vroom vroom) submitted a car design to Herr Hitler for a
simple and affordable vehicle to promote car ownership among the German
people. Voila the "Volkswagen". As a kid, in a family that had several
growing up, it would have been nice if they had included a heater.

– Two Leaf teams in Toronto! Say it ain’t
so! I don't think I could handle that much material. What if one of them
was actually competitive?
Surely the Comish has better things to do than tease
the Leaf Nation and John Balsillie. Of course, just to be clear – they
say the team would NOT be in Hamilton.
Where did this story start – was it the old “well
placed sources close to the . . . “ No one seems to want to fess up.
Ongoing news reports appear to want to quickly quash
this story as “nonsense”. Therefore there must be something to it – we
can only hope but . . .
My immediate reaction is that between the Leafs (MLSE)
and the Sabres, the chance of a second team in this market is about the
same as the Leafs making the play-offs – in other words nil.
Let me suggest instead that the NHL put a team in KW.
First they get their big bag of Balsillie bucks (love those “b”
alliterations). Then, look at all the classy names they can build on,
Rangers II, Greenshirts, Siskins, and my personal favourite the
Flying Dutchmen (and I’m German Irish). They would be right in RIM
country, a technology centre and two universities. They could draw from
the Golden Horseshoe (sorry Leafs and Sabres), Cambridge, Brantford,
Stratford, London – Strathroy – St. Thomas and off to the Elmira –
Fergus - Guelph – Orangeville areas. All of which is Crazy Canuck Hockey
Country. There is solid local media CKCO-TV, KW Record and other papers
and a whack of Radio AM and FM.
It is also a hotbed of minor hockey associations and
parent’s with more money than brains who would likely line-up to shell
out major coin for licensed merchandise and apparel Clearly I would
have to offer myself as VP Marketing to help them out!
Forgetting people’s noses getting out of joint you
could create one heck of a short travel – rivalry centric division –
Detroit, Toronto, Buffalo, Kitchener, Ottawa and Montreal. A new
Original 6 – who needs New York, Boston and Chicago.
Dream on – it makes too much sense so it will never
happen.
Which reminds me, in an
earlier blog I told you I would tell you who was on deck when Bobby
Thompson hit the “Shot heard round the World”. “The Giants win the
Pennant” should have been a clue as they moved to San Fran later with
their franchise player – the “Say Hey” kid – Willie Mays. He was a
rookie at the time. Many of you probably don’t even remember him. As a
trivia point I think Willie is the Godfather of another charismatic
individual in baseball – Barry Bonds (Willie was a team mate of his
father Bobby).
What’s up with Burke –
I know hockey people are special but if my employer made me an offer
relative to my current or an enhanced role I don’t believe I would have
the option of saying let me think about it for 6 months – I’ll let you
know in December. Is he that good? I don’t think so. Fish or cut bait
boys.
Next Week – presents
some challenges as I am away. I am not going to try (cause I can’t)
blogging from my Crackberry. Not sure what resident internet access I
will have so I am likely taking two notebooks – bus and personal and
hopefully don’t have to go hot spot hunting to log on to anything. My
blog could be sketchy BUT I need to stay on top of my hockey pool team
and roster moves. Can’t have the children catching up (Jane is no
threat). I may have to spend a lot of time at a Starbucks (they ALL have
wireless don’t they???).
P.S. as a follow-up, this pool thing is
now officially out of control. I have number 2 son proposing a
trade! This is more work than running a real team. I have Paul
Stastny and he wants to trade Brandon Dubinsky for him - should I go
for it?
Battle of Trafalgar –
In 1805 Admiral Lord Nelson and his fleet of 19 warships defeated
Napoleon’s navy. Nelson was shot and killed by a French sniper in the
close quarters engagements but it was before this battle that he
supposedly messaged from the flagship Victory his famous exhortation-
"England expects that every man will do his duty." (sexist
comment - but they did).
One
more time –
vphl@cogeco.ca is MY email address. While I do find some of the
content interesting and do advise senders that it is not an MOHA email –
I still keep getting them. Feel free to use it but recognize it is not
going to the puzzle palace.

Oct 20 –
Watched most of the Boston / Tampa Bay game last night and in a way it
was nice to see Tampa Bay win. It gives the media a chance to drag out
all the chestnuts:
-
Worst to First
-
Outhouse to Penthouse
-
Cellar to Stellar
Etc., etc., etc.
Ya
gotta love “the kid” coming in as the closer. Walks into a crisis in the
8th and finishes off the 9th – How much prior
major league experience did this guy have – 5 games? That’s how to
mature / sink or swim in a hurry.
They
have to do something about the time for these games as those of us who
have to get up bright and early find an 11:30 PM – 12:00 AM wrap a
little tough – and that’s without any post game show in an East Coast
game.
It also
looked good for Boston Big Bucks to go down and join another big spender
- Yankees on the sidelines. Not that many will be super excited about a
Philly / T Bay series. Especially as it could have been a Boston / LA
contest which both the networks and advertisers would have preferred.
Basement Saga – seems my blog is a good way to communicate with son
#1. Apparently he read about our “clean-up” and came screaming over all
concerned that we were going to throw out his “goodies” – especially the
Mac.
Pool –
continues as a dirty word in our house as yours truly is maintaining his
dominance. Number 2 son has zoomed up to second on some shrewd roster
moves and Jane is mired in fourth / last. Today I notice so dumped half
her team and tried to get some new blood – “Good Luck”.
Blacklists – for those of you familiar with this concept perhaps the
most notorious of all was put into motion today in 1947 when a US
Congressional Committee – The House Un-American Committee (HUAC)- began
investigating Communist influence in Hollywood. Are you or have you
ever been a member of the Communist Party?" Some big names allegedly
fingered others - Gary Cooper, Robert Taylor, Walt Disney and Jack
Warner--gave the committee names of colleagues they suspected of being
communists. A lot of careers and lives were ruined.
On a
lighter and higher note in 1968 the “Fosbury Flop” was pegged when Dick
Fosbury “flopped” his was to an Olympic gold and a world record with his
then unorthodox style. He cleared 7 feet 4 and one-quarter inches. I
have no clue what the current record is but there is no way a human
being should be able to do that.
Gotta
go - apparently I have to catch up on four seasons of 24 in the next
three weeks before the new season starts - Couch Potato here we come.

– Quick notes for today
-
Argos out of misery – Check
-
TFC out of players – Check
-
Leafs 5 games into season on 4 game losing streak –
Check
It
appears the Toronto sports world is unfolding as it should.
Baseball – I may actually have to watch the MLB play-off game
tonight – at least for a while. Full credit to Boston for coming back
from the dead. I believe I heard that last night was the ninth
consecutive “do or die game that they have one – like em or not that is
pretty impressive. Besides that, seventh games are always worth a look
and after the other night in Beantown you can never count them out. Down
7 – 0 with 2 out in the seventh and they come back and win. No wonder T
Bay is reeling as they see themselves getting fitted for their new
“choke” collars. As some would say though, it is about time the big
paychecks produced.
Basement – with the new shelves complete the find / sort / keep /
trash challenge has begun.
We
“geeks” apparently really struggle to part with some of our treasures.
To date I have discovered and “trashed”:
-
My
innovative Colorado Memory Systems External Tape backup drive with a
series of high capacity 120 meg tapes. When I first got one of these
for back-ups I thought I had really stepped it up.
-
An
External parallel port Zip Drive with a series of 100 meg
cartridges. 100 meg on a “portable” device – holy silicon Batman.
-
Boxes of software applications – MS Office, MS Publisher, RBase,
Norton, Dbase, Word Perfect, Encarta, Act, Adobe PageMaker and
Illustrator and countless others. The original value of these makes
me cringe, but fortunately as a “consultant” at the time I got most
of them as eval copies for next to nothing.
On the
Hardware side
v
3 PCs
v
1 Mac Plus (kept that – son #1 wants to turn it into
an aquarium!!)
v
Boxes of sound cards, video cards, IO cards, modems,
mice, and cables cables cables – serial to PS2, SCSI, RS232, Gender
Changers, null modem, patch cords and who knows what.
Maybe I
should have had a garage sale or opened a “nostalgia PC shop.
Nostalgia – Speaking of nostalgia, I have located / rediscovered and
hung on to my Pioneer 8 Track Recorder / Player. How many of you have
one of these components. I also have a number of 8 Tracks to go with it
– Woodstock, Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and who knows what else. Now al I
need is a car deck and Jane’s old 64 Rambler Rebel!
Actually, I should probably contact Pioneer and see if it is worth reel
(pun intended) money.
Lesser finds – Apparently I did not destroy all of my old pictures
as some of my Hanson brothers specials showed up to the amusement of all
but me. Hanson brothers – the thick black plastic glasses often taped as
the result of a sports misadventure – Yup – that was me. If I feel
really crazy some day I may scan and post but don’t hold your breath.
Pool
– My team continues to dominate despite all the plotting against me.
However there has been a change. Number two son’s revamped team has
surged past Jane leaving her in last place. This is not sitting well.
She now claims she did not know the rules and did not know she could
swap out players to an injury reserve list. I think half her team is
broken – too bad!
History – for all you Habs fans, today in 1957 Maurice “the Rocket”
Richard scored his 500th goal on the way to a total of 544.
The debate rages – who really is / was the best hockey player ever –
Richard, Howe, Orr, Gretsky? I vote for Mr. Elbows.

– Fun night at the Peewee Reds last night. For some of us easily amused
folks, sitting in an arena for four hours (a bit less because of Wings –
not Detroit or the Oakville Black jersey types but the ones you eat) can
be enjoyable. After two weeks of games with four 2 and 0 teams and four
0 and 2 teams and with some blow-outs it was going to be interesting to
see how the hockey gods league officials were going to call this
from the balancing front. From what I saw last night – which does not
matter, there will be some interesting conversations as each game
(forget the scores) had reasonable back and forth play between the icing
lines. I will remind people of what I always told convenors – you cannot
balance for coaches and you cannot balance for goalies. Again – my
opinion.
What
was almost if not more entertaining than watching the game was watching
the “hockey people”. Those of you who know me understand that I am
noticeable at the rink and I was noticed. It was funny to see who would
acknowledge I was there with a word, wave or visit and who was very
careful to pretend they did not see me. I will freely admit I did not
pursue conversations with anyone, I went to watch some hockey. For
future reference, you need not be afraid. There is a short list of
people I have “words” for and a long list who are just volunteers and
parents in hockey – enjoy. I don’t think you are at risk if you are seen
talking to me but who knows?
Pool
update – I survived a light (for me) player schedule last night
courtesy of some low scoring or shut out games – AKA the Leafs. Number 1
son is sneaking up quietly in second place, Jane is languishing in third
due to some misguided loyalties and stealing my Detroit players and
Number 2 son is distraught in the basement “literally” and planning a
wholesale secret shake-up of his team. My “flyer” was McCabe who I
picked as my last D thinking he had something to prove and would get
about 90 minutes of ice time a game and 400 shots in Florida – Wrong –
he’s gone.
Star
Headline today – “Dion ready to call it quits – “Quelle Surprise!”
For most people, including prominent and die hard Liberals, it seems
that decision is about a year (or so) too late. For speculation, will
Bobby “the chameleon” Rae successfully jump from one party leadership to
another demonstrating that a) they are all the same and b) many people
have very short memories. Stay tuned.
US
Election – Apparently the lipstick hockey mom is going to be on SNL
tonight. I would watch it but there are too many interesting other
things to do and I don’t know if I could tell Palin and Fey apart –
maybe Fey should run for VP. Answer – I can PVR it (unless Jane’s
already got stuff programmed). If McCain was not “done like dinner”
before, he is now.
Harvey’s – Harvey’s makes a hamburger – a (not so) beautiful thing.
Good thing I didn’t hit the local Harvey’s when I was up in the North
Bay area a couple of weeks ago or it could be E.coli time. Don’t think I
want to be that franchise owner as he will join McCain (politician not
NB royalty) on my “Done like Dinner list. Is it my imagination or are we
getting more of these “tainted food issues – Maple Leaf – TO Chinatown –
North Bay – Wayne’s BBQ? It’s just not safe to eat anymore. A plug for a
local – “I guess I’ll have to check out Monika’s Supperware”.
Cheap shot of the day – but everyone is entitled to an opinion. I
have seen a team wearing what is apparently the new “official” Oakville
Ranger Rep Tie. Is it ever ugly. First, folks should decide what is
truly the Ranger “blue” and then stick to that colour. Companies or
people with “marks” also have specs for them whether the colours are
pantone numbered or some other system but every time I see a blue it
seems to be a different colour, shade or tint. Second, big is not
necessarily better and the “huge” Ranger shield looks ridiculous,
especially on the younger players. I was looking for the battery cable
as I thought they must light up. As a test, you should ask yourself
whether you would wear that tie in public – other than the obligatory
rink use. Funny – the adult bench staff were not wearing them. Look
around at companies that have “corporate logo ties” – small, subdued,
classy – big, brash, tasteless. I hope someone checked for an OK in the
NHPLA/Ranger licensing agreement.
Shelves – Day 2 – Moorehead and Son Construction Company finished
their basement renovation / shelves building project today. Required one
extra trip to Canadian Tire for the proper length screws and additional
bits but other than some aches and pains the project was a spectacular
success. I believe it demonstrated to son number 2 that the old man did
have a few good ideas and was actually capable of using both hand and
power tools without personal injury or property destruction. Next step –
sorting through the flotsam to see what goes on the shelves and what
finds a permanent new home in Halton landfill – decisions – decisions –
decisions. I think the way it will work is my stuff goes – Jane gets the
shelves.
History - Today in 1867 the US took possession of Alaska. With the
current gubernatorial export, they may want to give it back. This is
also the day when in 1977 "Mr. October" - Reggie Jackson hit three World
Series Home Runs. What was unique about this accomplishment was that he
hit the three homers in 3 consecutive at bats, on 3 consecutive pitches
from 3 different pitchers. Where did it happen - Yankee Stadium of
course.

Oct 17
– A somewhat belated and abbreviated post for yesterday (17th) as we
went to the Peewee Reds last night. My apologies to the Hound Dogs and
Wolf Pack for not staying for their whole game as I was hungry and had
phoned in a pick-up order for The Wingery (best wings in town).
Vocabulary - A new word has entered the Moorehead lexicon – “Communifake”.
According to research up “Up to 74 Percent of People 18-24 Admit
Faking Calls”. Are you guilty? According to the same data, 42% of women
and 32% of men concede that they fake phone calls. And here I though
women were just – always on the phone. It seems communifaking is
designed to solve two “issues”
1.
Avoid having to talk to someone “live” (fake being busy) and,
2. Imply you are busier or more important than you are (status).
Tied to
the status argument, apparently men like to flaunt their flashy toys
like “iPhones” to attract women (note to self – tell #1 son to be
careful lest new daughter-in-law gets wrong idea). I guess it’s cheaper,
safer and more “eco-conscious” than the muscle cars of my generation.
I found
this article hysterically funny when I thought about some folks I know.
Click here for the link. I must admit, I had never thought of it but
will put it to good use in the future.
Poolies - I am now faced with either icy silence and the “look” or
choice blasphemies at home whenever I mention “hockey pool”. I picked up
45 points last night versus a max of 12 for any of my poolie colleagues
/ former family members. I am rapidly approaching my goal of alienating
everyone. However, pool fame could be short lived as I have only a few
players on the ice tonight versus “a Whack” for the others. If they
don’t make up a lot of ground tonight it could get really ugly!
Buffett - While I admit that it’s an over simplification, Warren
Buffett does know how to “make” money. He is now currently advocating
“buy American” and says he is moving from the US treasuries to equities
market. His hope is as the song says “that people follow like sheep” –
if they do, and with his “reputation”, a lot likely will, the laws of
supply and demand pushes share prices up and he wins again. Like they
say – it takes money to make money.

– Watched the US Presidential Debacle
Debate. The only thing scarier than what was our Canadian choice is to
pick between those two keeping in mind who each of their back-ups are!
Yesterday I couldn’t even spell President and now I are one.
I was a bit concerned that Dion was going to bail
before I had a chance to set-up the pool but it looks like he’s not
committing to anything (how politician like) for at least today. Problem
is no one seems to care or want to bother.
Markets – continue in
free fall mode (at least in Canada – the DJIA ended up in the black) .
Apparently they did not think much of the debate / election either.
While your gas will be about 4.9 cents a litre cheaper tomorrow (enjoy
the less than a buck feeling), weigh that off against the trashing your
financial portfolios are taking. Retirement may be a thing off the past
– can we all work until 80? That would be a real treat. Jane and I
better start renegotiating with the offspring to arrange care and
feeding in our old age.
Four games – that’s how
long it took for the first NHL coach to become cannon fodder and he won
his last game. After a 1-2-1 start, Chicago has punted Hall of Famer
Denis Savard in favour of Joel Quenneville. Let me guess – I’ll bet when
he was brought in last month as a “pro scout” none of this was
considered! I wonder if Savard figured it out. He probably had his bags
packed waiting for the axe to fall. But – look on the bright side –
Chicago did not name an interim coach. Take a hint local yokels.
Fine Dining – on a
lighter note or not, it’s time to drag out all the old Chinese food
jokes about missing cats and assorted rodents. For those of you who have
not heard (and care), be careful of your choice of chop houses in TO. In
the current sweep, a fourth location has been shut down for "failure to
protect food from contamination." The “Swallow” (appropriate name – or
not) apparently had an affinity for cockroaches. Yech!

Oct 15 –
The Election is over and generally speaking more of the same. Oakville
changes colour from red to blue so we will see if that makes any local
difference. We now have a member of the ruling government as compared to
a member of “Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition”. Results do lead to a
couple of interesting office pool candidates though.
Will Dion voluntarily jump or wait to be pushed? –
look out for the . . .
How long – hours / days / weeks – no more?
Stories are already circulating about the time frame
for and “front running” candidates to take over the job. A little “lame
duck” or in deference and respect of our two official languages “canard
boiteux” for anyone?
What happens to the Green party with no elected reps
– do they turn brown and fall in the fall? They should join up with the
Rhinoceros party and battle the pink elephants.
NFL – I enjoy watching
NFL football (sorry C Funny L fans) as a die hard Steelers fan but don’t
find as much time as I would like. This is a very orchestrated and
complex game and don’t kid yourself - very big business. However, this
is one sport where I strongly endorse going to watch at the stadium
instead of on TV. While I have not been to nearly as many Football
stadiums (stadia, stadiorum, stadiis?) as I have ballparks and I am not
in the sporting sense a “Cheesehead”, my all time favourite sporting
event was having the chance to go to a Packers game at Lambeau Field.
Photo below with my father in the borrowed Packers mask – he’s the
handsome devil with the two colour face. Goofing around like this at his
age, he must be a Moorehead! The animated yahoo beside him is someone we
had never seen before who lent him the mask and became his long lost and
instant best friend. Ya hadda be there!

I particularly enjoyed the beer funnel bus (but you
do get “slightly” damp and smelly.

CNN / SI.com has a
great review of the “experience at all NFL fields and Lambeau comes out
on top.
Follow the link Having been to both though this survey does have a
credibility issue as there is no way Lambeau can finish second to
Buffalo on tailgating! From my experience they aren’t even close.
Condolences to my brother Jerry – a long suffering,
seasons ticket holding (dating back many years into the old Silverdome)
Lions fan. Besides having a team that s___ks, they finish 31 out of 32
on the overall stadium ratings.
Get a grip - The great
“To suspend or not to suspend” (and for how long) debate continues and
is escalating. It might help if the protagonists and change proponents
actually figured out what they are “arguing about”, understood the
options and impact and then made an informed decision. Hopefully the
right one for the kids. Some of the comments have been absolutely
ridiculous and demonstrate a complete lack of understanding. Keep an eye
on this as it could be just the tip of the iceberg if people actually
read the entire rule book on this and other items.
This is truly a dark day in history. In 1989 a
young 28 year old upstart named Gretsky had the unmitigated gall to
break Mr. Hockey’s all time points record with his 1,851st
point. Mr. Hockey is my all time favourite hockey player and in terms
of all around factors I would argue is the BEST hockey player of all
time. As Gretsky said at the time "Gordie is still the greatest,
in my mind, and the greatest in everyone’s mind."

Oct 14
– Post Thanksgiving return. I found it
difficult to find any blogging time or enthusiasm for it over the
weekend. The weather was too nice, there were too many things going on
and I did not have a lot that I wanted or was ready to comment on.
I got suckered into building shelves on Sunday which
is a good reminder of why one should respect the Sabbath as a day of
rest – my aching . . ..
Hockey (NHL) is now in
full swing and after their first game euphoria, the Leafs are trending
to plan. They looked brutal against Montreal and included their classic
meltdown move by blowing a three goal lead to the “powerhouse” Blues.
After beating the Wings in their opener it was funny reading / listening
to the positive bandwagon media / fans who were making Cup plans, that
then turned south after the Habs. Only in Leafland. They seem to have
the Blues after the Blues.
It appears that Checking from Behind (CFB) does not
seem to get called a lot in the NHL – they often colour it as boarding
or some such silliness – when you hammer a guy’s shoulder blades driving
him face first into the glass call it for what it is. I guess that’s one
of the reasons I wonder about the continued presence, impact of or need
for a guy like Ryan Hollweg. For whatever reason Fletcher seems to like
him as an “effective player”. I’m not sure how effective you are from
the press box and with a reputation as someone who plays outside the
rules but maybe he sells tickets to the Meatheads – wait a minute, they
don’t have to sell tickets to the Meatheads, the ACC is full of
Corporate Sushi Suits.
Hockey Pool – it’s
early in the season but my pool team (aptly named Omnipotent) is
thumping the other family members and bitterness is creeping in. I pick-em
and forget em. Son Number 1 in a desperate battle for credibility is
revamping his pool line-up EVERY DAY – bringing players off his bench
who play that day to sub for the guys on teams that have the night off!
Does anyone know how to spell DESPERATE! I thought this pool was to
assess hockey acumen not logistics ability. Who says my family isn’t
competitive. I expect I’ll get caught cause I’m too lazy for all this
tradin stuff.
BlueJays Baseball Beeston’s Back
– The quadruple B alliteration - It appears that in the spirit of
ecology the BlueJays are expanding their recycling program by bringing
Paul back on an interim basis to replace Paul. Interim is such a catchy
way to cover a multitude of “options” – every franchise should have at
least one and why limit it to the key Executive roles, it could open up
so many more opportunities when people can’t make up their mind, don’t
want to commit, don’t want to offend, don’t have a clue or all of the
above. Officials could have an interim referee or umpire, how about an
interim bat boy or clubhouse manager. How about an interim goal judge or
Zamboni driver. Come on guys, hire em or fire em, I don’t deal well with
interim employees - just consider the Fletcher mastermind.
A new feature – “What do you think”.
What would you think if a rep team came into
Oakville, both teams had their pre-game warm-up, referee blows time to
get the warm ups wrapped up and the teams lined up at centre ice for the
obligatory hand shake / equipment check. Then once the home team is
lined up at centre ice waiting, the visitors congregate in front of
their bench for a protracted “team cheer” leaving the home team standing
around. Would you:
a)
think it was funny
b)
be “PO’d”
c)
expect a delay of game or unsportsmanlike conduct call from the
officials
d)
pick a fight with an opposing parent
e)
not even notice
f)
don’t care
Well, the scoop is (so I’ve been told from an
“impacted” parent) that one of the Oakville Rangers AAA teams pulled
this stunt up in Guelph. The officials did nothing other than stand
around looking bewildered, the Guelph players were upset, the bench
staff was livid and the crowd was howling. Stories are going around
about what they should do in reprisal against what they felt was
unsportsmanlike and disrespectful behaviour (I know “who dunnit”). By
the way, what goes on the road does not necessarily stay on the road.
Way to represent us guys. Guess I will be checking schedules for the
rematch.
My answer – a minimum of b and c.
Too bad I haven’t found the time to figure out a
polling control!
Today in history – we
have an election. I have gone and exercised my democratic right. Hope
you all did too. I just love elections – they are so representative!
So our choices for the evening – more shelves,
baseball, election coverage (20 minutes until the odds makers call it) –
decisions, decisions.

Oct 10 – House
League Suspensions.
I
consider this an important topic based on my experiences as a parent,
coach and “former” executive member. I also consider it important that
the league discipline committee and especially its chairperson merit the
trust and respect of members as a result of their actions which should
reflect integrity and respect for the truth. Part of earning that
respect should be a practice of not spreading lies about people or
events they know nothing about - a concept that seems to be lost
on the current incumbents.
Maybe,
just maybe if the lies pile up high enough, people will see them for
what they are.
Case in
point, The new discipline chair has recently sent out an encyclical to
all directors with information to pass on to all convenors and coaches
indicating that all penalties assessed warranting suspensions will be
served in full. I and many other responsible individuals have disagreed
with this approach in the past and I will outline my thoughts on that
later. However, once again it is the blatant lies and insinuations that
are being thrown around about me that I take exception to.
His
note says in part
“In prior years Wayne
Morehead had his own rules that he went by and used, and who knows where
they are today”
First of all, Wayne Moorehead did not have his own rules – other
than my personal rule of trying to base any decision I made on what I
felt was right for the most kids. Find me a “Wayne Moorehead” rule book
as implied and I will be glad to apologize – Oh yeah, I forgot I took
all that stuff!
Second, I was only one member of the discipline committee which
managed discipline policies and suspensions. I was not the chair
although I tried to sit in on and participate in most “hearings” during
which the committee reached a majority decision. Those of you who had
the “misfortune” of enjoying one of those sessions can attest to the
process. It is true that not every suspension case had a full committee
hearing, but those instances went to the Discipline chair and were
assessed normally in consultation with me where we consistently followed
the process established before the board and in similar case hearings.
Third, the guidelines around this process were included in both the
Convenor and Coach Guidelines – available to everyone off of the web
site. A portion of the 2007/08 Coaches Guidelines that addressed
suspensions is reproduced below. Note the caveat on physical offenses
and minimum 1 game suspensions.
19 Playing Rules – Game Suspension
Policy.
Coaches are reminded that the
M.O.H.A. operates under the auspices of the O.H.F. and the O.M.H.A. and
is therefore governed by their rules.
All game sheets indicating suspensions
will be forwarded to the Discipline Chairman / Committee for
information, confirmation and tracking purposes. Minimum suspensions
attributed to physical infractions, or non physical suspensions limited
to one game are not normally subject to review or appeal.
Coaches should clearly understand that
any carryover or “outstanding” game suspension penalties incurred
in Tournament or Exhibition play MUST be reported and
served in subsequent league play regardless of any games already served.
It is important that the full
extent of any suspension is served i.e., any suspensions not
completely served in subsequent tournament games must be served in
league play.
Failure to report or comply with this
rule will result in additional game(s) suspensions for both the coach
and player(s) involved. Any games played with an ineligible player as
per the above are also subject to forfeit.
Fourth, the “rules” were well known. Essentially the format for
House League internal games was to go by the prior version of the OMHA/OHF
suspension list that recognized when in a game an infraction occurred
(early infractions, often 1 game less as long as 10 minutes or more were
left in the game) as well as to allow review of multiple game
“non-physical” infractions. Suspensions earned by individuals in games
outside of our “friendly” House League confines had to be fully served
as warranted under the current OMHA/OHF rules. A “second offender” got
the “full meal deal”.
Fifth, this approach was specifically approved by the Board of
Directors and the most recent bylaw update was (I believe) modified to
remove restricting language that was counter to this. Discussion around
potential liability exposure was covered with the board at the time. It
was also approved recognizing that it was at variance with the OMHA/OHF
suspension policy as it has always been MOHA’s point of view that MOHA
would administer their own House League.
Finally, I continue to resent and challenge the accusation or
implication that I “took” stuff, made stuff “disappear” or made stuff
unavailable to the new cabal. Those insinuations are becoming tiresome
and are flat out lies that reflect the character or lack of it of those
creating and spreading them. Take responsibility and stop blaming all
your problems on someone else.
So much
for the new Discipline Chair’s credibility – he fits right in.
Previous Approach
Now
lets consider the “whys” of our “former” approach to what could be
referred to as “reduced sentences” or “parole”. In short form:
·
House League players typically have a much shorter season
than Rep players relative to the number of games and their frequency. I
think that this year the Peewee Red division has a schedule of only 16
regular season games. A multiple game suspension in HL therefore “takes
away” a greater proportion of that player’s season than a similar
suspension to a Rep player.
·
The requirements and certification levels for officials
are not as stringent in House League and typically the “more seasoned”
and dare I say “better” officials are used in Rep games with the more
junior or developing officials in House League (as it should be – they
need to learn and develop somewhere – but not at the expense of the
players). Your leaders will likely argue this but go watch the games and
draw your own conclusions. Having said that there are some great refs in
House League who do a great job and they are to be commended for that.
·
House League Players are typically less experienced and,
or not as well trained trained to understand the “consequences” of their
actions – especially for the non physical infractions like “yapping” –
an inappropriate comment to a trigger happy official can cost three
games or more.
·
House League coaches are also often learning as well and
may not have stressed or worked on the “consequences” of actions with
their players (or themselves) – again for the same type of non-physical
stuff referenced above.
·
At the risk of further alienating the Zebras who are now
in power, this can lead to calls made in House League that may not have
been made in a Rep game or a series of calls stacked on a player that
are inappropriate or excessive. . We have seen it happen on more than
one occasion. However, once it is signed off on a game sheet, it is the
official record of the game and subject to the suspensions outlined.
We (the
past regime) did not feel that this one size fits all approach or the
automatic game totals were always appropriate for our House League
participants and hence the approach we (not just me) followed that
allowed flexibility (but still consistency) This approach was presented
to and approved by the board. It has been in place for a number of years
and was a process the current Executive was well aware of.
And
guess what – it worked!
Let me
use a couple of examples (based on real events) to illustrate what can
be involved.
Example 1
Two
Peewee players on their first shift are racing for the puck in the
corner. Both angle in correctly but at the last minute Player A gets
half a step on Player B and rotates to block out B and cover the puck.
Player B has no opportunity to change position and runs into A on the
boards. He hits Player B around the shoulder area and B bounces off the
boards, and goes down - winded. The referee who is behind the play and
potentially at least partially blocked out sees the player down
“decides” the hit was from behind (GM50 or GM51) and makes the call for
a penalty. Player B is slow to get up, trainer comes on the ice and
administers to player. Referee decides that the player was “injured”.
The referee having made the call now has no choice but to assess it as a
5 minute major (GM51) due to the perceived “injury” aspect. Player A is
told he is out of the game and is upset as he feels he did absolutely
nothing wrong (of course this is supported by his team mates yelling
from the bench - possibly coaches also). Player A realizes he is gone –
can’t believe it and comments that this is “Bulls___”. Referee hears,
takes offense, interprets the comment as challenging his call (with
profanity) and decides this should be penalized as well (GM21). Player A
– Gone. Player B gets wind back, returns to bench and come out for next
shift and plays balance of the game.
Game
sheet comes out – Player A’s situation
| |
Result |
|
First shift ejection from current game – balance of game |
1 Game |
|
+ GM51 Checking from Behind (Major) |
3 Games |
|
+ GM21 (Disputing call – abuse of official – profanity) |
3 Games |
|
Total |
7 Games |
Almost half the season. Remember – “the book says. . “
In a
Rep game a variety of different things could have happened – it could
have simply been a 2 minute minor boarding call – no suspension. It
could have been a minor CFB – GM50 and one game or even if it was a
major CFB and 3 games it is unlikely that the GM21 would have occurred
or been tagged on. Do the math, recognize the game differences. The Rep
player could likely serve even three games within a week to 10 days and
be back at it. The HL player above is gone for 6 weeks.
Example 2
A 9
year old Atom White player falls into an opponent because “he lost
balance and fell”. Unfortunately he was behind an opponent at the time
so both went done. Opponent lands on stick and dissolves into tears.
Junior ref calls as a GM51 (Major) CFB. Kid is turfed from that game and
on paper needs to sit three more. He has no clue what he has done. Is
distraught about being removed from the current game and has no concept
of missing the next three games in a sport he loves. Now his tears are
everywhere.
Is that
what you want to happen?
It is
all well and good to take the “by the book” approach and that is an
“easy” decision to make and a decision that the new Cabal is entirely
justified in making if they choose to. A more difficult question is what
is fair and reasonable and in the best interests of your players. I
personally felt that our approach was right and continue to support it.
However it looks like that has become a “risk” that the current crew
don’t want to consider as it is easier and safer for them to just throw
the book at the kids.
Put
yourself in the position of any of the parents in the examples above and
ask yourself what approach do you feel is fair and reasonable?
Happy Thanksgiving – We know who the Turkeys are.
My
Wings – The scary thing is I predicted they would lose their opener
to Toronto. It’s easy to say that but I have witnesses. A bunch of
reasons other than I bear a striking resemblance to the Great Carnac.
·
First game of season – who knows
·
Toronto always plays the Wings tough – regardless and who
knows why but it is a great rivalry.
·
Banner raising – minds elsewhere – false sense of we are
invincible
·
Toronto – no pressure, remember the coach says wins don’t
count!
·
And don’t forget the old goalie saws – goalies can steal a
game – goalies can lose a game. Great pass from Osgood on the first Leaf
goal (who’s number 2 in Motown)?
The
season has 82 games – relax – who will be playing (and I don’t mean
golf) in June?

Oct 8 – Short post today as I am
recovering from a very stressful evening (yesterday) – The Moorehead
Family Hockey Pool (MFHP) held its draft last night with a lot of high
tension high tempo decisions. I am defending my Stanley Cup Pool
Championship with everyone gunning for me and taking my players.
The whole process was mega overkill. Poolmeister
Andrew had determined that we were going to use the Yahoo on-line draft
and pool management service. So, we all had to setup a Yahoo mail
account – yet another Email for moi. Then we had to bicker over the
league structure and point system – e.g., Poolmeister wanted to give a
.25 point for each save – YA THINK! I would have drafted 16 goalies.
Then we had the draft set for Monday night (you have to book them in
with Yahoo) but Monday as we get ready we find that a last minute change
by Poolmeister had automatically cancelled our draft window and
rescheduled it for a day later – last night.
Last night we get together for our second attempt
and fire up dueling technologies – Jane and the two boys in the kitchen
with three notebooks and I was banished to the office desktop. I should
have brought my office notebook so the four of us could have sat at the
kitchen table with four laptops. Technology is insane!
Anyway, all four of us log in, the draft countdown
hits zero and the draft window / programming fires up. Fortunately yours
truly had been randomly selected to go first and away we went. A count
down timer allowed 1:30 max for each selection and all four screens were
linked so we could see who got picked, they dropped off the eligible
list and populated your screen / team. I have to admit it worked
absolutely super and was a very impressive process.
It would be a great tool if Yahoo would let a minor
hockey group use the engine to run their drafts. Best of all for us the
pool and its management is free. You can do all kinds of things, waiver
wire, trades, injury reserve, etc., etc., etc. Stay tuned for exciting
updates on MFHP.
It is not too late to get in and for anyone who
wants to check it out here is the link
Yahoo Fantasy Leagues.
Local – I hear the Marlies are moving to JC
from Kinoak. Don’t you just love it when you pre-empt on something
really dumb! I imagine I’ll hear this was planned all along and had
nothing to do with my comments!
Sssssh - With the continued market skids I may have to spend
more time in these pools to ignore what’s going on around me. As a hint
to GO Train passengers. WE ARE NOT DEAF! You really should not be
talking about how your “unmanned” brokerage firm is working on a down
sizing, outplacement and restructuring plan. Someone just might
overhear.
From a history perspective 52 years ago in 1956 Don
Larsen pitched the first and only perfect game in World Series history
(for the Yanks against their perennial Bronx rivals). With today’s teams
and pitching specialists, you have to think that this is one record that
will never be matched. Having said that, you know it’s going down.
The other item is that this is the day in 1871 that
Paddy and Kate O’Leary should have kept a closer eye on their cow as
their barn fire started the Chicago Fire. The great fire killed between 200 and 300
people and caused damage estimated in today’s dollars of $3 Billion.
That would have likely put Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac out of business
then too.

Oct 6 – I could say “Leafs Blow Lead” but I already
have, so it would be redundant. So let’s go a little more Cliché with
“Leafs snatch defeat from the jaws of victory”. With just under three
minutes left and a two goal lead last night I was a little concerned
that I might have to proffer a large slice of humble pie as the Leafs
demolished the mighty Columbus Blue Jackets – sans Nash.
However, the fates stepped in to save me as the
blue shirts coughed up two in 15 seconds and lost the shoot-out (no
goals). I almost felt sorry for them, but you have to wonder how this
team can win a game in the regular season when everyone plays? Most
teams have a Top Tier Star and often two or three Tier Two. I have to
say the Leaf’s depth chart starts at Tier Three other than Toskala and
he won’t score a lot of goals.
Having cut up Ryan Hollweg (who is now 0-7 in
fights after last night) I will give him credit for going to Schenn's
defense nobody else seemed to be in a hurry to protect the kid who is
now staying with the club at least until he hits the magic games number.
Looking around at my Platinum buddies last night,
the question also becomes – how long are you going to be willing to fork
out $400 per plus lounge fees to watch this. Especially if the TSX and
Dow refuse to stop sliding and the breadlines lengthen. With damage
control and stock prices I think my retirement is now postponed until
2040 when I will be approaching 90 – not! Come-on 6/49. If some 28 year
old single yahoo from Guelph can win, why can’t I?
Back to the seats - Conspicuous consumption is not
going to be popular. Especially if they have to give away seats to riff
raff like me. By the way – thanks to brother – niece – unnamed Corporate
Mogul who made last night possible. As an aside – centre top golds /
lower reds are a better seat to watch the game (you don’t get big sweaty
guys on the bench standing and blocking views down the boards). You also
don’t get the bench security guy who is supposed to be watching the
crowd stare at you from a foot away for the whole game – and I didn’t do
anything.
Frugal shopper that I am (read cheap – remember my
stock prices) we did our pre game beverages and wings at Hooters.
Apparently two beers are on sale for $28 at the ACC – such a deal! Sorry
guys – that is inappropriate. I just want a drink – not shares in the
brewery.
With my two ACC visits Saturday and Sunday, I did
not get a chance for local viewing. However, I did see some scores; 9-2,
6-0, 8-0) etc. Looks like the forwards are playing D and the D are up
front in the lets fake em out until we’re balanced ritual. Either that
or there are some awful matchups.
I see in the Beaver that the Marlies are going to
practice at Kinoak in an event for the kids. Great – I am sure the kids
will enjoy it. At the risk of disrespecting Kinoak and seeming negative
to the idea, could some times not have been flipped to put them at
another facility (JC or RO or GA) where a) there is more space to
accommodate more people, b) the rinks are a little more conducive to
this type of an event and c) there are actually real dressing rooms?
Before anyone get all bent out of shape, I have spent more time at
Kinoak on or off the ice than most people but just think we want to put
our best foot forward as a community and as your association. We might
want them to come back.
Fish in a barrel time –
“CONVENORS NEED FOR THE
FOLLOWING: there will be no games with convenors!” – would someone please interpret for
me. I did not take English as a second language.
Go Train – On Time – SRO – apparently a new pattern
here.
Time to bail. I have a 40 minute presentation to
make tomorrow to our Corporate IT folks about our division – live and
via remote. Since I hear the camera adds 10 pounds I need to go and work
out. Several trips to and from the fridge out to do it.

Oct 4
– 7:38 AM GO Train – on time – lots of seat – Of course – it’s Saturday.
This is
turning into a hockey week-end only not as planned. I went down to the
ACC for the Tim Hortons Coaches helping Coaches session as planned –
more on that later. The key result is I DID NOT WIN THE TICKETS TO THE
WINGS TONIGHT!. Not happy. However, I will be watching the Leafs
tomorrow night, apparently first row behind the visitors bench – is this
Platinum Sushi land be still my heart!.

Columbus Blue Jackets (has anyone heard of these guys?). Seems my niece
got 2 tickets and gave them to her father / my brother who was so
desperate for someone to go to the game with he called me! I suppose
I’ll have to buy the beer (tickets would probably have been cheaper).
Anyway,
watch for me on TV – I will be the guy either sleeping or in a dustup
with someone. Go Wings Go.
Back to
Timmy’s CHC event. Besides no tickets, I did not win anything else
either – so not fund raiser for you guys. I did get a pair of tickets to
next Friday’s Marlies opener – Bids anyone!
Turns
out that this was not really a CHC event but rather a publicity stunt
for Tim Hortons to introduce their new Hockey Dad size coffee. Pictured
below.

This
new item will soon be available at a Timmy’s near you. Retail pricing is
still not definite but it will likely be around 99.99 cream, sugar,
freight and dealer prep not included.
Meanwhile at the CHC program, one humourous to me, but probably not to
the Derrick and the other TDL folks is that they ran out of product,
well before everyone had a chance to get a coffee and Timbits or muffin
– including me. If I had a conscience, I would likely be embarrassed to
admit I snuck back out to Union Station and Second Cup for the necessary
refreshments – but I don’t and I did.
Human
nature (read Greed and Selfishness) is always fun to watch at these
events. TDL was kind enough to provide a lanyard and whistle as a thank
you to attendees – or at least they tried to. They had people entering
in line and going past the tables (unfortunately unsupervised) where
they had first the lanyards then the whistles. Guess what? Halfway
through the line, there are lots of lanyards left but no whistles as
“buddies” were scooping multiples into their little bags. Polite, or
slow person that I am, I did not get a whistle. Fortunately I think I
have about 50 as it is and no team to use them on anyway.
The
program (the book) was excellent, primarily because the high gloss back
cover was the print ad we shot at Oakville Arena last year that has been
running in different media. Looks great and way to go for Oakville
Timbits.
As far
as the content for the event, a couple of comments. Overall, it is
always worth while to take in an event like this as you inevitably learn
something.
My
biggest take away was that the Specialty Clinics offered by Hockey
Canada – and through the OMHA, are a great way for coaches to get
practical learning and skill development either just for the heck of it
or as the way they pick up “points” to refresh their certifications as
they come due. There is excellent practical content and I think it beats
the “oh I have to go refresher clinic” where coaches go to get their
ticket punched. It was something I had planned on looking into but was
not to be. It is still a good idea. Darryl Boynton lead that session and
is a good contact.
From a
more detailed – “older” age perspective, Tim Hunter and Rob Zettler did
a pretty comprehensive presentation on Defensive Zone Coverage – it was
last on the agenda and pretty heavy on the techno aids and clips but had
good info.
And yes
– some of the Leafs were out for a practice but according to Wilson it
was more to get Cujo ready for tonight then anything else – GOOD LUCK.

Oh Yes
- Don't forget the fancy new screen / scoreboard.
As a
quickie, they also had E.J. McGuire from Central Scouting who did a
decent job but could have lost the fancy computer program and simply
talked to the evaluations as provided in the book. These forms are I
think quite good in creating an assessment at any age and level and are
probably worth a look.
Overall
conclusion, the program seems to have moved away from as much “on-ice”
presentation as it used to have (when we demoed) and more to
presentations. It is also shorter. While it was a worthwhile session, I
would like to see more “good” on-ice / off ice support blended content.
However, that is only my observation. It seemed to me though that fewer
people are coming out. I think they had about 1,100 versus the 2,500 or
so we demonstrated for. I also did not see too many Oakville faces – or
maybe they were avoiding me.
So do I
watch pre-season Toronto Detroit or agree to continue with Boston Legal
and rest up for tomorrow.

Oct 3 –
Donkeys Win!

Although neither side committed any major gaffes,
from a response / content / presence perspective I have to give “Joe”
the nod. His answers, at least to me seemed to be more on point with the
questions whereas I’m not sure how often, if at all, Palin actually
responded to what she was asked. It seemed she was guiltier of
“spinning” everything to a series of “answers” that she was rehearsed on
and could use to play “attack dog”.
Unfortunately, neither one struck me as having that
intrinsic quality that seems to be a prerequisite for high office or as
a world leader (or potential leader).
Having said that I must admit that Palin did better
than I expected and it was an entertaining debate to watch.
One interesting point to me was the apparent
disagreement between the two on the role and, or actual powers of the
Veep. Biden took Sarah to the woodshed on this one in blasting both her
perception of the powers she implied the Veep had and in particular a
run at Dick Cheney and his current actions.
Did not see any of the Canuck version but apparently
I did not miss much. Four against one and they still can’t win.
New York – One of the Globe and Mails pictures
this morning was a shot of the USS Intrepid passing the Statue of
Liberty on route back to her dock at pier 86 in NYC. For those of you
who are Air / Navy / War / Movie buffs, this ship is a must visit if you
get a chance.
The following link takes you to the web site for more
info.
http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/

The aircraft carrier USS
Intrepid passes enroute to her dock at Pier 86 on the west side of
Manhattan in New York.
I had toured this ship a few years ago prior to her
departure for a significant two year refurb project and look forward to
a chance to go back. While the ship is huge, I was struck by how “small”
some of the fighter jets are when you get up close and personal.
They also have a 1950s era submarine there that I
missed on my last go around. While I have been on subs before, this one
is a goofy looking critter as it has a missile laucher build in (sort of
on deck) for a 60 foot cruise type missile. When you are 6’ 4” you have
to go through one of these boats to appreciate just how cramped and
small they are inside. Full marks to the submarine service – I don’t
think there is any way I could have done it. No movie does it justice
(although Run Silent Run Deep is one of my favourites).
Bail Out bill passed the House as expected but
the market was not impressed. Up earlier in the day the Dow closed down
over 150 points.
Hockey - I intend to hit the ACC tomorrow morning for
the CHC event. That will likely get me more into the hockey mode and
inclined to comment on some of what I am hearing. No point in letting
people get complacent as I see by the other web site that here today –
gone tomorrow is still modus operandi.
FSMT - A little birdie told me that it looks
like the Peewee bracket of the FSMT is already FULL!
Kudos to the Frank Sabatino Team. They are building
quite a positive reputation for their tournament.
1951 – The Shot heard Round the World. I
remember it well – I was six months old (go ahead do the math). The
Giants were playing the Dodgers (Brooklyn – not transplanted yet) in the
first NL playoff series ever since NY had won 37 of their last 44 games
to force the tie.
The old bottom of the ninth, trailing 4 – 2 two men
on and down 0 – 1 in the count – Bobby Thompson smokes the next pitch
over the Polo Grounds left field fence for a “walk-off” and the immortal
Russ Hodges chant “The Giants win the Pennant”.
For all you trivia fans, the question is who was on
deck. The answer will lead off my next post.
The Giants went on to the World Series and got smoked
but what else was new back then.
I had almost forgotten we are in baseball playoffs as
my Tigers did not make it so I will have to cheer for the transplanted
Dodgers. Wouldn’t it be nice to see Joe T stick it to the Yanks. Shades
of 1963 when the Dodgers wiped out the Yankees four straight and I won 5
bucks from my Grandfather a die-hard Yankee fan. Oh yeah – I forgot –
the Yanks didn’t make it – TOO BAD!
Almost forgot - GO Train - On Time - SRO!

Oct 2
– Interesting clue in Today’s Metro crossword puzzle, particularly in
view of the challenges to my use of the Queen’s English. 28 Across –
Clue – “Plotters’ group. Answer – “Cabal”. Vindicated once again since
crosswords can never be wrong!
Leafs – need I say more
– 12 shots 6 goals save percentage 0.5. Cujo played more like his
Stephen King namesake than an NHL AHL Beer league goalie – and
this was against St. Louis. Plus their new potential goon got into three
fights, apparently lost them all and has been tagged as a cheap shot
artist for some dangerous hits from behind. What will they think up
next.
GO Update – Train close
to on time – Standing room only.
The debate - The big question tonight is
whether to watch some last season episodes of Boston Legal to catch up
for the new season or the Veep debate from the good old USA.

Both will be good for some laughs but I may have to
opt for Denny Crane and his mad cow disease to keep peace in the
Moorehead household.
Oh – I forgot to put the Canadian debate in the
choice list – yawn.
ACC – don’t forget –
Saturday is the Tim Hortons – Coaches Helping Coaches event. It will be
interesting to see what the turnout is after last year’s debacle at the
Ricoh Centre and how good the content is.
One of my favourites –
Johnny Carson” took over as the host of The Tonight Show today in 1962.
He stayed with the show for almost 30 years although in the later years
it seemed like he did maybe half a dozen shows a year. One of the
recurring bits that was fun was the Great Carnac mind reader and seer
par excellence and the sealed mayonnaise jar the porch.
One of the great short lived spin-off spoofs that was
even funnier than The Tonight Show was Fernwood Tonight with one
memorable episode “proving” that leisure suits cause cancer. Rats
dressed in cute little leisure suits had higher incidence of cancer than
the control rat group. Clearly I have a warped sense of humour.

Oct 1 - GO Bashing!
I may have to include GO Transit bashing as a regular
feature. After yesterday’s whining about “lateness”, I headed to
Clarkson this morning with a fresh perspective. Wonderful – the 7:03 was
only 5 minutes late and made that time up with a “screaming” trip into
union Station.
Those of you who are familiar with GO Transit know
that there are rituals and rules involved in the process. It is also a
big “game”
The Clarkson “express” objective is to “get a seat”.
Since I take the bus to the station I don’t have to play the parking lot
fight game so I will leave that for a later day – maybe when I complain
about pick-up.
As the last stop for a reasonable time morning
express to Union, everyone and their cousin wants to be on this train so
seats are at a premium (or non-existent).
Let the games begin!
·
First, you determine which car you want
to be on if you want to coordinate your arrival at Union with quick
access to a platform exit so you can beat the herd through the
concourse.
·
Second you need to weigh the benefits
of potential Union Station platform real estate versus likelihood of a
seat in that car.
·
Next you need to assess where “exactly”
the train will stop at Clarkson so you can be right at the door to
hopefully be first to rush onto the car and beat all those other SOBs to
any seat should you be so lucky as to find one. – recognize that the
engineers are not always consistent or predictable which causes havoc
with the lemmings on the platform if the train doesn’t stop where “you”
think it should.
·
With a potential spot picked out, you
need to jockey for position (remember to stay behind the yellow line as
high speed trains may pass at any time). This is where you get into the
“polite” competition with other regulars who have the same mindset on
location selection. Who gets there first? How close can you get to edge
in without violating their personal space? Should you edge in beside or
stand behind and concede first place?
·
Then as the train pulls and starts to
stop you need to assess if you are on the money or if you need to try to
shade your position to improve you “door” odds.
·
Finally once the train stops and the
door opens, how quickly can you move in without physic flattening
someone (even though you might like to!
The other aspect is patron courtesy (or perhaps more
appropriately discourtesy. Today was a classic. GO had two locomotives
on the train so it totally messed up my location selection. That left me
in the herd trying to get on the train. Recognizing that there are not
seats, people should get on, move in away from the doors, move up to the
upper level (recognizing it is SRO) and let people get on the train –
makes sense!
Ya Think!
Today the rocket scientists on the train had not
moved up the stairs to the upper level, they sat on them instead – not
just on one side so you could squeeze through but on both sides so that
you could only get past by climbing over them. Then they plugged up the
passageways!
Therefore, the upper level aisle is clear (for SRO),
the lower level entry and aisles are jammed and people (including moi)
could not get on the train!
There was a young lady in front of me who had the
classic “deer in the headlights” look on her face, so I excused myself,
stepped in front of her, politely asked people to get up and or move as
others needed to get on the train and then played human bulldozer for a
chain of people pushing through the idiots that did not have either the
brains or common courtesy to move.
It was unbelievable to me how many people (who I am
sure think they are warm, kind and rational human beings) felt they must
have had a divine right to anchor themselves in place.
We got on, some toes got stepped on, I got lots of
space with my conga line to stand on the second level and I can now
probably add a number of disgruntled GO patrons to my hockey “enemy”
list.
Those of you who don’t ride GO don’t have a clue what
I am ranting about. Those of you who do, I hope I didn’t step on you
this morning as you should know better.
If not, wear your safety shoes and elbow pads cause
I’m coming through.
Senate passes the Bail Out – off to the House we go.
They only added about another $199 Billion in sweeteners. Can you spell
LOBBY?
I hope those august senators don’t break their arms
from all the patting on their own backs that they are doing.
62 years ago today, the Nuremburg trials ended with
the sentencing of the top Nazi war criminals. 12 were sentenced to death
and 10 were hung 16 days later. Goering committed suicide the day before
and Bormann was sentenced in absentia. The trial was the first of its
type and has been depicted in two very good movies since.
From the Sporting world and picking up on an earlier
blog it was today in 1961 that Maris hit his 61st home run to
break the “Babe’s” record in his second at bat in the Yankees last
season game. Since it was their 162 game versus the 154 game season Ruth
had.
